What Is UHMWPE inner liner pulp conveying pipe?

 

This kind of pipe is like a "sandwich", usually consisting of three layers:
Inner layer (functional layer): Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). This is the core, in direct contact with the slurry, and is responsible for resisting wear and corrosion.
Middle layer (adhesive layer): Special heat-melt adhesive or epoxy resin. It functions like a strong glue, ensuring that the inner plastic layer and the outer steel pipe are firmly bonded together, forming a single unit.
Outer layer (structural layer): Steel pipe (carbon steel or stainless steel). It provides the necessary mechanical strength, rigidity and pressure-bearing capacity for the pipeline, and protects the inner lining from external damage.

Key Characteristics of UHMWPE Slurry Pipes

 

Super strong and highly durable: The wear resistance is 4 to 7 times that of ordinary carbon steel, and 4 to 8 times that of nylon or polytetrafluoroethylene.

Extremely low friction: The friction coefficient of the inner wall is extremely low, approaching that of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

Excellent anti-corrosion property: Resistant to the corrosion of various acids, bases and salts

Impact resistance: Excellent impact resistance, maintaining good toughness even at -40℃ low temperatures.

The outer steel pipe determines the pressure rating of the pipeline, enabling it to meet the requirements for high-pressure (3-8 megapascals or even higher) transportation.

How to choose and apply?

 

When making a choice, there are several points that require special attention:


Select the type based on the operating conditions:

  • General high-pressure wear-resistant and anti-corrosion: The preferred material is steel-lined UHMWPE pipe, which is the most widely used type.
  • If there are explosion-proof requirements (such as in underground coal mines): It is necessary to select UHMWPE pipes that are anti-static and flame-retardant.
  • Requires frequent movement and disassembly: You can choose UHMWPE reinforced composite hoses that are lighter in weight and have some flexibility.

Key parameter limitations:

 

  • Operating temperature: The long-term operating temperature of UHMWPE is typically between -50℃ and +80℃. If the pulp temperature frequently exceeds 80℃, it is necessary to confirm whether it is within the material's tolerance range.
  • Connection method: Usually, flange connection is adopted to ensure the strength and sealing performance at the interface.
     

Economic considerations: The initial purchase cost of this type of pipe may be higher than that of ordinary steel pipes. However, considering its extremely long service life and extremely low maintenance costs, in harsh conditions such as pulp transportation, its total life cycle cost is much lower than that of traditional pipes, making it a very cost-effective long-term investment.
