Reinforced Thermoplastic Pipes RTP Pipe
You can think of it as a kind of high-tech "sandwich" - the inner and outer layers are responsible for transporting the medium and providing protection, while the middle layer is supported by high-strength reinforcing materials (such as fibers or steel wires) to bear the high pressure. This structure enables it to possess the corrosion resistance of plastic and the high strength of metal at the same time, making it a balanced composite pipeline.
The core structure of the RTP pipe
The RTP pipe is usually composed of three layers, each of which plays an irreplaceable role:
Inner lining layer
- Material: High-density polyethylene (HDPE), cross-linked polyethylene (PEX), or polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), etc., are all thermoplastic plastics.
- Function: Directly comes into contact with the transported medium, providing a smooth flow channel, reducing fluid resistance, and playing a crucial role in corrosion prevention. Different inner lining materials can be selected based on the chemical properties of different media.
Enhancement layer
- Material: This is the "strength core" of the RTP tube. It is usually made by symmetrically winding high-strength fibers (such as polyester fibers, aramid fibers) or fine steel wires at a certain angle.
- Function: Withstand the circumferential stress and axial stress from the pressure within the pipe. This symmetrical winding design ensures that the pipe maintains its size stability under high pressure and does not undergo excessive deformation.
Outer protective layer
- Material: Usually made of HDPE or other thermoplastic plastics.
- Function: Like a sturdy coat, it protects the reinforcing layer in the middle from mechanical damage, ultraviolet radiation and environmental erosion, ensuring the long-term structural integrity of the pipeline.
The core advantages of the RTP pipe
Superior pressure resistance, safe and reliable
The reinforcing layer endows it with the ability to withstand high pressure. Its pressure resistance capacity far exceeds that of ordinary plastic pipes. Depending on the design and the reinforcing layer, the working pressure of RTP pipes can exceed 15 megapascals (MPa), capable of easily handling high-pressure conditions such as oil and gas extraction and mine transportation.
Internal and external anti-corrosion, worry-free throughout the life cycle
The plastic materials of the inner and outer layers have excellent resistance to chemical corrosion and can easily withstand the erosion of oilfield produced fluids, sulfur-containing media, slurries, brines, etc. This fundamentally solves the problem of metal pipelines easily rusting and perforating when transporting corrosive media, significantly extending the service life of the pipelines. The design life is usually over 20 years.
Lightweight and high strength, easy to install
Its weight is only about 1/6 of that of the same-sized steel pipe. This means lower transportation costs and no need for large lifting equipment at the construction site, resulting in extremely fast laying speed. Especially in mountainous areas, deserts or underground environments with limited space, this advantage is particularly prominent, significantly reducing the overall project cost.
Good flexibility, available in rolled form
Unlike rigid steel pipes, RTP pipes retain the flexibility of plastic. They can be produced and supplied in a rolled form (each roll can be several hundred meters or even several thousand meters in length). This significantly reduces connection joints during construction, reducing the risk of leakage and accelerating the installation process.
Good temperature resistance and strong adaptability to working conditions.
Depending on the selected plastic base material, RTP pipes can operate for a long time within a temperature range of -40℃ to +90℃ and even higher. This enables them to be suitable for cold northern regions as well as meet the requirements for transporting high-temperature media. Some products also have insulation functions.
The main application fields of RTP pipes
The petroleum and natural gas industry
This is the most core application area of RTP pipes. It is widely used for:
Oilfield surface gathering and transportation: Collecting the mixture of crude oil, natural gas and water produced by oil wells.
High-pressure water injection pipeline: Inject water at high pressure into the oil layer to maintain the pressure of the oil layer and enhance the recovery rate.
Transportation of produced fluids from oil and gas wells: Transporting the fluids produced at the wellhead to the processing station.
High-pressure alcohol injection: In gas field extraction, ethylene glycol and other anti-freezing agents are injected into the wellhead to prevent the formation of natural gas hydrates that could clog the pipelines.
Mining industry
In the mining industry, RTP pipes are highly suitable for transporting slurries and tailings containing solid particles. Their wear resistance is superior to that of steel pipes, and their lightweight feature is particularly advantageous when installed underground.
Chemical Industry and Salt Industry
Used for transporting various highly corrosive chemical media, brine, salt water, etc., it can perfectly replace stainless steel or lined plastic pipes, providing a longer service life.
