Material Classification of ABS
From a materials science perspective, ABS is classified as:
Amorphous engineering thermoplastic polymer
Terpolymer plastic (acrylonitrile + butadiene + styrene)
General-purpose engineering plastic positioned between commodity plastics (like PE/PP) and high-performance engineering plastics
It is widely used in injection molding, extrusion, and thermoforming processes.

Main Characteristics of ABS Products
ABS products are valued for a combination of mechanical, thermal, and processing properties:
1. High Impact Resistance
The butadiene rubber phase provides excellent toughness and shock absorption. ABS maintains good impact strength even at relatively low temperatures, making it suitable for protective housings and structural components.
2. Good Mechanical Strength and Rigidity
ABS offers a balanced combination of tensile strength and stiffness. Products made from ABS can withstand moderate loads and mechanical stress without deformation.
3. Excellent Surface Finish and Processability
ABS flows well during molding and produces smooth, glossy surfaces. It is easy to machine, drill, glue, and paint, which is why it is widely used for consumer products and industrial parts.
4. Chemical Resistance
ABS resists many acids, alkalis, and oils under normal conditions. However, it can be affected by strong solvents and certain organic chemicals.
5. Electrical Insulation Properties
ABS has good dielectric strength, making it suitable for electrical enclosures and insulation components.
6. Moderate Heat Resistance
ABS typically has a heat deflection temperature around 80–105 °C, depending on grade. It performs well in general indoor environments but is not ideal for high-temperature applications compared to materials like PC or nylon.
7. Dimensional Stability
ABS exhibits low shrinkage during molding and maintains stable dimensions, which is important for precision parts.
