introduction
When a slurry pipe wears too quickly, increasing the wall thickness is one of the first ideas that comes up.
It makes sense.
More material means more wear allowance.
But a thicker pipe doesn't necessarily fix the reason the pipe is wearing in the first place.
A mining slurry pipeline can have plenty of wall thickness in the straight sections while elbows, reducers or pump discharge sections are already showing serious wear.
The question isn't always "How thick is the pipe?"
Sometimes it is "Where is the slurry actually attacking the pipe?"
More Wall Thickness Doesn't Change the Slurry
Adding thickness doesn't change the material being transported.
If the slurry contains hard mineral particles, those particles will still travel through the pipeline. If the flow velocity is high, they will still move at high speed.
And when the flow changes direction at an elbow, the particles will still tend to move toward the outside of the bend.
The thicker pipe has more material available to wear away, but the operating condition hasn't changed.
For a pipeline carrying abrasive mineral slurry continuously, that distinction matters.
A thicker steel pipe, for example, may last longer simply because it has more metal to lose. But the internal surface is still exposed to the same abrasive medium.
The Wear May Not Be Spread Evenly
This is where many slurry pipelines become difficult to evaluate.
A 1,000-meter pipeline doesn't necessarily experience the same wear from one end to the other.
The straight sections may be relatively stable.
An elbow may be much worse.
A reducer may develop localized wear.
A section close to a pump may see a different flow condition from a downstream section.
If inspection only looks at average wall thickness, these differences can easily be missed.
For an UHMWPE slurry pipe, the same principle applies. Material selection matters, but so does the location and cause of wear.
Why Do Elbows Take More Abuse?
Particles in slurry have mass and momentum.
When the liquid enters an elbow, the liquid can follow the bend, but heavier particles don't always change direction at the same rate.
Some particles move toward the outside radius.
They hit the wall.
They slide.
Then more particles arrive behind them.
The process repeats for as long as the pipeline is running.
That is why an UHMWPE slurry pipe system with many bends should also pay attention to the specification of the elbows.
Making the straight pipe thicker while leaving a high-wear elbow unchanged isn't much of a solution.
Particle Size Changes the Problem
Not all slurry is equally abrasive.
Fine particles can produce continuous sliding abrasion.
Coarser particles can create stronger local impact.
Hard minerals such as quartz can be particularly demanding because of their abrasive nature.
The solids concentration matters as well.
A high-solids slurry puts more particles through the pipe during the same operating period than a dilute slurry.
So when selecting a UHMWPE mineral slurry pipe, "slurry" is not enough information.
Particle size, material hardness and solids concentration give a much clearer picture of the actual service condition.
Where UHMWPE Changes the Approach

图 1
UHMWPE doesn't simply add more wall thickness.
It changes the material that the slurry is contacting.
UHMWPE has high abrasion resistance and good toughness. Its smooth internal surface is also suitable for the transportation of abrasive slurry.
That makes it interesting for applications where the main concern is continuous contact between mineral particles and the pipe wall.
The material also has good corrosion resistance in many chemical environments, which can be useful in mineral processing systems where the slurry contains corrosive components.
The advantage isn't that UHMWPE makes wear disappear.
No pipe material can remove the effect of an abrasive slurry.
The point is to use a pipe surface that is better suited to that operating condition.
What About UHMWPE-Lined Steel Pipe?

图 2
Sometimes the problem isn't simply wear resistance.
A large-diameter or high-pressure pipeline may also have structural requirements.
That's where UHMWPE lined steel pipe becomes relevant.
The steel outer pipe provides the structural layer, while UHMWPE forms the internal wear-resistant surface.
This is different from a solid UHMWPE pipe, where UHMWPE forms the pipe body.
For a mining slurry pipeline, the choice can depend on pressure, diameter, support conditions, installation method and the required mechanical strength.
The wear problem and the structural problem should be looked at separately.
So Should You Use a Thicker Pipe?
Sometimes, yes.
Wall thickness still matters for pressure, mechanical strength and service allowance.
But thickness shouldn't be the only response to repeated slurry wear.
If the same elbow keeps failing, investigate the elbow.
If wear is concentrated near a pump, look at that section.
If the whole pipeline is wearing quickly, check the slurry concentration, particle size and flow velocity.
If the pipeline has recently changed its operating conditions, don't assume the original pipe specification is still appropriate.
A thicker pipe can give you more material.
It doesn't automatically give you a better wear surface.
